The Ben Body

“After a while I grew fed up of all the talking and started translating everything Lieutenant Shue said into Mandarin in my head. And then Finnish. And then Mandarin and Finnish simultaneously. I was too busy with that to take much note of what he was actually saying until he got to the bit about hurting people.”

Humans are not all identical. You do not play hide-and-seek with dead bodies. Changing the colour of your eyes is frowned upon. These are some of the things the alien calling himself Ben learns when he comes across a spaceship full of humans for the first time. He has soon read the entire contents of the ship’s computer and knows more about humans than the whole crew put together, but is interested enough to hang round for a while and play at being human. He can create matter out of nothing, starting with his own body, and while he takes up new hobbies such as surgery and dissecting other people’s watches, his contact officer Lieutenant Shue and the rest of the crew of the prospecting ship Bonaventure have to come to terms with the alien amongst them.
